THEOBALD, Alfred Jesse

No.8480, Private, Alfred THEOBALD
Aged 26

1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment
Died of Illness as Prisoner on Tuesday, 23rd April 1918

Alfred Jesse Theobald was born in Hartest (Sudbury Q1-1892 4A:739), son of Walter and Esther Caroline THEOBALD (née SMITH).

1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Lower Street, Stanstead, Suffolk with his father Walter THEOBALD [36] farm labourer; his mother Esther [31]; brothers Daniel [7] and John [1] born Stanstead; sisters Beatrice [6], Violet [4] and May [3]. All were born in Hartest except John.

1911 census...Aged 19, farm labourer, he was at Triangle Cottages, Barnham with his parents, brothers Dan (farm labourer), John, James [8], Peter [4] both born Stanstead and Sidney [2] born Pentlow, Essex; sisters Violet, May, Mary [6] born Stanstead and Maggie [1] born Hawkendon?. One of the 12 children had died.

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. He died in Munster as a prisoner of war. Unfortunately his Red Cross card gives very few detail, except the card is stamped 24th March 1915, gives him as Suffolk 1st and Ypern..Munster 3. This seems to say he was captured in the Ypres Salient before 24th March 1915. The usual cards giving more personal details and when and where he was captured are not available. The 1st Suffolks were certainly in the Salient from 2st January 1915. All the British graves in Germany were concentrated into four major cemeteries after the war, hence he was moved to Cologne Southern, probably around 1922/1923.
